David Nowell-Smith, Vehement Lyric: Political Commitment in Young British Poets
This essay explores political commitment in contemporary British poetry, looking in detail at three poets, Sean Bonney, Marianne Morris, and Keston Sutherland, who the essay considers to be representative of broader trends. These poets re-engage with the genre of ‘lyric’, exploring its limits and possibilities as a means of articulating the predicament of radical politics over the last decade. This results in a compelling reflection on what it means to write politically engaged poetry today.
