Giuliano Gozzelino, Freedom of education at the beginning of the State of Savoy. Problematic aspects and institutional solutions between 1840 and 1861

In France, freedom of Education in the Secondary School becomes a law in 1833. The debate crosses over the borders and enters the Kingdom of Sardinia, with different outcomes. For Piedmont, through the freedom of education issue we can better understand the request for reform, the hesitations of the moderate party which rose to power and the counter strike of the conservatory and reactionary parties. This essay faces this problem before the Cavour’s decade and, then, during Cavour’s government, in order to highlight the historic importance of the methodical movement which lead, moreover, to the mandatory and free Primary School.
